UN PRI 2016 Consultation: Sustainable Financial System, Principles, Impact

unpri_sustainable_financial_systemThe Principles for Responsible Investment is the United Nations supported network of over 1,500 investors working to promote a sustainable global financial system. The organization is increasingly contending with issues related to the “operation of the financial system as a whole, including its purpose, its design, its effectiveness and its resilience to risks and sustainability challenges.” To that end, PRI launched a formal consultation in 2016 on: Sustainable Financial System, Principles, Impact.

The consultation aims to “inform the next phase of the PRI’s work to promote a sustainable financial system. It identifies and seeks feedback on the underlying causes of risk and sustainability challenges in the financial system and the areas the PRI, working with signatories and partners, is best placed to positively influence. The consultation also seeks feedback on whether changes to the Principles are required to capture this work; how the PRI can better align its work – and support signatories to better align their responsible investment activities – with the objectives of the newly-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and how the PRI should measure its success over the next decade.” Read more here: https://www.unpri.org/page/pri_website_base.pri-formal-consultations

The consultation has produced a number of documents. These include:

A Formal Consultation Report. From the report: “In this paper, we identify the areas of the financial system we believe the PRI, working with signatories and partners, is best placed to positively influence; the underlying causes of risk and sustainability challenges in the system; and the drivers that may shape these over the next decade.”

A Literature Review. From the report: “This document supplements the PRI’s formal consultation document Sustainable Financial System, Principles, Impact, specifically the “Developing a sustainable financial system” section. It summarises the various analyses of the financial system by international institutions, academics, think tanks and investors that we used in preparing the formal consultation document.”

A Supplementary Report. From the report: “This document supplements the PRI’s formal consultation document Sustainable Financial System, Principles, Impact, specifically the “Developing a sustainable financial system” section. It explains the PRIs proposed framework for contributing to a sustainable financial system in more detail, to make our thinking clear for signatories and stakeholders interested in a deeper discussion of the PRI’s work in this area.”
